Therapeutic tuning forks: the precision tool of sound therapy
Whilst Tibetan or crystal bowls envelop the body in a veritable ‘bath’ of sound, the therapeutic tuning forks act as the ‘scalpels’ of sound therapy: they enable targeted treatment with surgical precision on specific anatomical points.
Here’s everything you need to know to approach your first session with confidence.
1. Tuning forks vs. singing bowls: Two approaches to vibration
The fundamental difference lies in the propagation of the wave and the method of application:
- Singing Bowls (Tibetan or Crystal): They produce a spectrum rich in harmonics (several notes simultaneously). They fill the space to induce a sense of overall relaxation and a meditative state through acoustic resonance.
- Tuning forks They issue a a single, pure and stable frequency. Unlike singing bowls, some tuning forks are designed to be placed directly on the body in order to transmit their mechanical vibrations deep into the body.
2. Application to the body: Weighted vs Unweighted
Il existe deux grandes familles de diapasons thérapeutiques, et le praticien les utilise de manières très différentes :
Weighted (Vibrating) Tuning Forks
These tuning forks have small weights attached to the ends of their prongs. These weights dampen the audible sound but amplify and prolong the physical vibration.
- Usage: The therapist strikes the tuning fork and places its metal prong directly on strategic anatomical areas: acupuncture points, joints, tense muscles or along the spine.
- Effect: The vibration travels through the skin, muscles and bones, acting as a highly effective internal micro-massage at a cellular level to relieve physical tension or soothe tender spots.
Unweighted Tuning Forks (Acoustic)
Their necks are smooth. They produce a clear, powerful and airy sound, but the vibrations in their necks are much less pronounced.
- Usage: They are used at a distance, mainly near the ears or moved around the body within the bioenergetic field (the aura).
- Effect: They focus on listening, the re-evaluation of brain waves and the psycho-emotional sphere.
3. Solfeggio Frequencies
The sound therapy system frequently relies on sacred frequencies of Ancient Music Theory, a range of 6 to 9 specific frequencies (measured in hertz, or cycles per second). Each note is traditionally associated with an intention to restore emotional or energetic balance:
| Frequency | Traditional intention in sound therapy |
| 396 Hz | Freeing oneself from fears, mental blocks and guilt |
| 417 Hz | Facilitating change, resolving deadlocked situations |
| 528 Hz | The so-called ‘transformation’ frequency (often associated with DNA repair or mental clarity) |
| 639 Hz | Harmonising human relationships and fostering connections |
| 741 Hz | Awakening intuition, self-expression and detoxification |
| 852 Hz | A return to the spiritual order, deep intuition |
Scientific note: Whilst the relaxing effect of these sound vibrations on the nervous system (reduced cortisol levels, activation of the parasympathetic nervous system) is recognised, the mystical properties relating to biological transformation (such as changes to DNA) fall within the realm of energy-based beliefs rather than conventional medicine.
4. How the first session is conducted and how to prepare for it
A tuning fork session is usually carried out whilst lying down, fully clothed, on a massage table.
What can you expect?
- The initial interview: The practitioner will discuss your needs with you (stress, specific aches and pains, tiredness, insomnia) in order to select the appropriate frequencies.
- Immersion: The therapist will first ring tuning forks near your ears (to activate both hemispheres of the brain) to guide you into a state of alpha relaxation.
- Bodywork: If the approach is physical, you will feel gentle pressure at the points where the metal tine of the tuning fork transmits the wave to the skeleton and tissues. It feels like a tingling sensation or a wave of warmth, and is generally very pleasant.
Tips before you visit
- Make sure you stay well hydrated: Water conducts sound. Drinking a large glass of water before and after your session optimises the propagation of mechanical waves through your tissues (which are made up of more than 60 per cent water).
- Wear loose-fitting clothes: Avoid large metal buttons, bulky zips or chunky jewellery, as these may cause unpleasant crackling noises or false contacts when the tuning fork touches your body.
Important contraindications
As a precautionary measure, the use of weighted tuning forks directly on the body is strongly discouraged or requires strict medical advice in the following cases: pregnant women, people who are carriers of a pacemaker, the presence of surgical implants (plates, screws) in the target area, or in the case of recent fractures.
